It was 24's Time

The Emmys, TV 's night of nights was on yesterday and 24 emerged the big winner. Taking home lead actor (Kiefer Sutherland), directing (John Cassar) and the big one: Drama Series. In its previous 4 seasons it has only managed to get one major award before in writing for the pilot. However the wins were still not a big surprise seeing the season was critically heralded as it's best season ever and the series submitted on the whole killer episodes to the judges. After the ceremony double winner Kiefer Sutherland who won for lead actor and drama series (he is one of the producers) said "Tonight has been an honor but it's also an incredibly humbling experience... and the other shows that were nominated this evening I think are fantastic as well".

Now if a series wins one Emmy award in a year it is certainly worth congratulating however many series win one or more awards at the Emmys so it isn't a claim to fame. Unless that one Emmy is Outstanding Comedy series which the Office received this year. After suffering much criticism for having the nerve to try and copy the acclaimed British series they came back this season with amazing and hilarious episodes, that stand in their own right as comedy classics. It's also getting much harder to compare the UK and US versions because their quality is getting on par. The UK fans will be pleased to hear that Ricky Gervais received an Emmy for comedy series as he is a producer of the show. Star of the show and also producer (thus Emmy winner) Steve Carrell said after the ceremony "it would be nice for something nice to happen to me, I'd feel better about myself personally".

After 7 years of brilliant performances of the West Wing Martin Sheen leaves the office without an Emmy for President Jed Bartlet. However The West Wing did have something to boast about at the ceremony this year. Alan Alda's win for Best Supporting Actor in  Drama Series makes it the Emmys most honored Drama of all time. With 4 Best Series wins and 27 statuettes in total. Congratulation West Wing!

Here's a summary of the evening:

THE GREAT:24 takes best drama series (I would have preferred West Wing but 24 was so good this year), Grey's Anatomy shut out of all major categories, Alan Alda's Emmy win that got West Wing the record (24's Itzen would have been great as well), Conan's brilliant hosting and arguably best intro to the Emmy's ever as well as Jon Stewart and StevenColbert's presenting being probably the best I've seen in a while "kneel before your god Babalon!".

THE AVERAGE: Blythe Danner's win showing some love for Huff however it should have been Smart's, Marishka Hargitay's win was alright but she robbed Francis Conroy from a deserving win for Six Feet Under's final season, Tony Shaloub is solid as Monk however Larry David and Steve Carrell out performed him and although I think Will Arnett deserved the award for supporting actor Jeremy Piven was a good choice.

THE BAD: Six Feet Under's incredible final not getting the drama writing or directing awards, The overrated My Name is Earl claiming the comedy writing and directing awards and Megan Mullally's farewell win however it was a weak category

THE DEVESTATING: Martin Sheen yet again being robbed of the Emmy by the sub-par performance of Sutherland (and I do love Jack Bauer) and Julia Louie Dreyfuss wining purely for breaking the Seinfeld curse because she turned in at best the third best performance in the category and thus stripped Jane Kaczmerek from getting a much deserved win for Malcolm in the Middle.

Put aside the devastating and you have a great Emmy awards. I wonder what next year will bring?

A Gab with GOB

On Wednesday I had a great opportunity to participate in a web chat with Emmy Nominated Will Arnett (GOB Bluth) from Arrested Development. It was a lot of fun. Amongst other things I suggested if he won he should use the phrase ‘solid as a rock’ and do the chicken dance. Here are the questions I aksed:

Noble: G’Day from Sydney and Conratulations on the nomination Will, is there any chance for an Arrested D Movie?

Will Arnett: Yes

Professor Chaos: Will, do you think an Arrested movie could actually happen?

Will Arnett: a movie might happen

Noble: I'd love a movie

(talk changed to his emmy nomination and possible acceptance speech)

Gob Bluth: i know....but it won't really matter, cause i think piven's got it

Noble: If you don’t win, first I’ll take off my pants then I’ll…

Noble: Will, pack your speech full of AD references

Will Arnett: my speech would be in mandarin

Will Arnett: a billion people speak it

Noble: What's a favourite Arrrested D moment

Will Arnett: when the family got drunk trying to do an intervention for Lucille

Will Arnett: hardest i have ever laughed in my whole life and it was caught on camera

Will Arnett: i laughed for an hour and half afterwards

Will Arnett: my fave AD ep is "Afternoon delight" or Pier Pressure

Noble: Afternoon Delight’s my favourite aswell

Noble: I'd love to see you on 24

Will Arnett: ok

Professor Chaos: haha

Will Arnett: as an actor?

Noble: Thanks Will, hope you win and if your ever in Sydney feel free to pop in for a chat

EMMY NOMINATIONS OUT

The Emmy's went wild for 24 and Grey's Anatomy which scored 12 and 11 nominations respectivley.

The Emmys tried a new approach this year to have the top 10 finalists for series and top 15 finalists for lead acting have their best work screened by a blue ribbon panel. Well no one can argue that the results were jaw-dropping.

Drama series champ from last year Lost got snubbed due to a confusing submission. Grey's and House made it into the race for the first time. The Sopranos and The West Wing are returning past champs. However this year it's 24's to lose, can Grey's or Wing stop it in it's tracks.

The comedy series category slapped Desperate Housewives in the face to see The Office and Two and a Half Men their first look. [Scrubs] scored its only nomination of the year here. Vetran nominiee Curb Your Enthusiasm saw back in. As well as past champ Arrested Development. Office, Arrested and Curb look like frountrunners at this stage.

Lead acting categories saw even more surprises with the notable snubs being:
All Desperate Housewives ladies, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Hugh Laurie, James Spader, Patricia Arquette, Mary Louise Parker, Hank Azaria, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman and Zach Braff.
This led to surprise inclusions of:
Stockard Channing, Kevin James, Charlie Sheen, Christopher Meloni, Geena Davis, Allison Janney, Dennis Leary, Peter Krause and Martin Sheen.

Supporting categories saw less surprise having used the old system. But a notable one consists of Will Arnett bumping out fellow AD cast member Jeffery Tambor.

May I offer a quick congradulations to The West Wing, Arrested Development, Martin Sheen and Will Arnett on their nominations and wish them the best of luck.

My predictions are coming soon.

Winging Empty Casket

Just a few weeks ago in the States a West Wing episode called "Requiem" aired. In this episode the cast and crew of the show decided to pay homage to the actor John Spencer, who passed away in early December due to a heart attack, by having a funeral for his character, Leo McGarry, whom died in the same way.

The actors death was a shock to many, especially the cast members he's been working on the show for almost 7 years:He was "one of those rare combinations of divinely gifted and incredibly generous… There are very few personal treasures that you put in your knapsack to carry with you for the rest of your life, and he's one of those," said co-star Richard Schiff, who played Toby Ziegler on the show. Martin Sheen whom was contacted by the New York Post said "He was my brother, that is the most I can say... I just adored him, it's too bigger hole".

With the funeral episode for Leo being shot only a month or so after the death, it would have been an emotionally trying performance for the actors where the raw emotion displayed in the episode was real. In 2002 Spencer recived an Emmy for his performance on The West Wing and many say that this year he has another good chance in what will be The West Wing's final season (a decision that was made before he passed away).

As the West Wing winds up they are holding back no punces with the final season including: A White House leak investigation, Live presidential debate between Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits, a 2 part election, the Requiem episode and the return of Emily Procter, Mary Louise Parker, Oliver Platt and Rob Lowe as Sam Seaborn all leading up to the finale. All this could see the series wrap up with a record breaking Emmy for drama series.

However it will be some time before the final season reaches our shores (Australia) as the ABC is only only up to season 4 and although they have said they'll now air double episodes on Thursday nights to catch up it will still be a while.

So until then, Rest In Peace John.

Development Arrested

The news I've been dreading has come to fruition with creator and exectutive producer Mitchell Hurwitz pulling Arrested Development's proverbial plug.

"The fans have been so ardent in their devotion and in return ... I've given everything I can to the show in order to try to live up to their expectations," Hurwitz told Daily Variety on Monday in a telephone interview from Gotham. "I finally reached a point where I felt I couldn't continue to deliver that on a weekly basis."
This practically ends an offer from US cable network Showtime to run 26 new episodes over 2 years, whom made it clear Hurwitz' attacment to the show was manditory. "He was actually very persuasive in telling me how much he believed in the show. I walked away thinking, 'Maybe,' " Hurwitz said.
Ron Howard (executive producer) asked Hurwitz if he'd be happy to remain as a consultant if they are able to sell it to another network. "I said I'd be happy to do that, but that as showrunner, I've gone as far as I can go," replied Hurwitz. Hurwitz also said that he hasn't ruled out returning to the Bluths in the form of a feature film.

However until then, Thankyou Mitch. Thankyou for the banana stand, the illusions, the final countdown, the seaward, Marta and her hermano, Anne, the loose seal, afternoon delight, the insect, jumping the shark for Burger king, the lessons and most importantly the chicken dance. May the Bluths rest in Peace and their legacy live on in DVD sales and repeats. This show was Solid as a Rock.
